We don`t break, we train and gain cooperation. First they are led with voice commands, then they are ground driven with surcingle and long lines...walk, trot, then driven with heavy harness (collar and all), then driven with the saddle, then ridden while being led, then ridden. It all ends up being quite boring and uneventful.

Youngsters are ridden lightly, large circles and using most of the rings. They are ridden indoors, outdoors, on trails, on grass, sand, wood chips and over poles on the ground to improve their adjustment and balance.

We also employ the exercise mill for getting some fitness on them and strength in their back before too much riding is done.

The process is gentle and thorough and generally takes 6-8 weeks to produce a rideable young horse that knows the basics of walk, trot and the concept of canter. True balance, lateral work and straightness will take longer. We like to be able to work with the rider who will be taking over after the initial training so that the transfer to the new rider can be seamless and consistency can be maintained.
